CLASSROOM POLICIES

Classroom Rules & Discipline

Our classroom is governed by five simple rules.

  1. Follow directions the first time they are given.

  2. Respect yourself, respect others, and respect your school.

  3. Listen while others are speaking.

  4. Be responsible for your own actions and learning.

  5. Show everyone kindness and support.

Our classroom community will be built upon kindness toward one another. I expect students to engage positively in the classroom as we encourage and celebrate everyone's accomplishments. Meeting these expectations will result in rewards. However, if a student chooses not to follow a classroom rule, the action will be recorded and the student will receive a hole punch on his or her Punch Card. Three infractions will result in an after school detention.

Homework

Short homework assignments will be given daily. Homework is designed to give students extra practice in order to reinforce concepts and make connections to material. Homework should not take longer than about 20 minutes per night

Homework assignments are due the day after they are assigned unless otherwise stated. We will generally go over these assignments  at the beginning of each class period, and students will receive a completion grade. However, homework will occasionally be collected and graded for accuracy. Late homework is accepted the day after the due date for a late grade.

Check the homework page for important reminders, homework assignments, and helpful links. Don't forget to check Tiger View to monitor academic progress.

Tests & Quizzes

Students will be periodically assessed with both tests and quizzes. Tests will be announced in advance to give students the opportunity to review concepts and ask clarifying questions. Quizzes will usually be announced in advance as well, but, on occasion, an unannounced quiz will be given.

Sometimes classes will end with an "Exit Ticket", which is a short (1-2 questions) assessment after a lesson. These will be graded for accuracy in order to assess learning for the day, show what needs to be retaught, and better inform my teaching overall. These act as mini-quizzes, but should not cause any stress!

Supplies

Students will need a one and a half inch binder and a pack of dividers specifically for math. All of our class notes, homework, and student reflections will be collected here, so it is important that these comes to class every day. Students will also need loose-leaf paper or a spiral notebook for homework and notes.

Throughout the year, students will also be using a number of other materials that I expect students to have readily available.

  • Ruler (inches & centimeters)

  • Calculator (suggested TI-30XIIS)

  • Highlighters (various colors)

  • Colored Pencils and/or Markers

  • Scissors

  • Glue Sticks

  • Dry Erase Markers

Absences

Following an excused absence, students will be given two days for each day he or she is absent to make up missed assignments. Students will be responsible for scheduling a time to make up any missed tests or quizzes.
